Joining mass inside Maumere Prison with Pater John Prior, inmates and their families, and with Anes who we followed that day. Anis is one of the few people on Flores who has been brave enough to disclose his HIV status. He is an AIDS advocate. I was producing a film about HIV and AIDS on Flores. Anis and his wife came over from Lembata. Anes works at the VCT clinic and is HIV-AIDS councelor. He is also one of the driving forces in KDS Maumere – the peer-support group. That day Anis was leading in mass at the church prison. Pater John’s sermon was about Stigma.
The atmosphere in the prison was cheerful. On Sunday all family members can join Mass. Afterwards we had a tour around the prison grounds. They have a workshop where inmates make beautiful picture frames from old papers and magazines. One inmate from Bali is an accomplished artist. He showed us his works and his cel, the best cel of all rooms.
